April 19th : Actually

Today’s word is “actually”.

While it’s a very common word used in English, it can be easily confused in some languages, like with “actuellement” (French) or “actualmente” (Spanish). So beware of this false friend.

In English, the word can have the following meanings:

To establish a fact (> in reality)

Ex: Actually, I didn’t do my homework

To emphasize (> really)

Ex: Have you actually become the new head chef of the restaurant?

To contradict (> on the contrary)

Ex: I guess you’re 50 years old – actually, I am 55.

To make a request or to give an advice

Ex: Can you actually open the windows? It’s too warm inside.
